Gary Lineker leaves Match of the Day but remains one of football’s highest paid players with new BBC contract – footboom1.com

Soccer and TV fans are preparing for a significant transition as English football legend Gary Lineker concludes his illustrious career on the BBC’s Match of the Day. Lineker, 63, has been the face of the iconic show for over 25 years and has officially announced that this season will be his final campaign as host. The show will undergo a major rebrand over the coming year to bring new energy and innovation to the long-standing format.

Even as Lineker faces his departure from the MOTD set, he has signed a contract extension with the BBC, ensuring he will remain within the network. This contract extension shows that Lineker will still rank among the BBC’s elite players for some time yet in a highly competitive broadcasting industry.

Since taking over as host of Match of the Day, Lineker has become synonymous with the show, especially after taking the baton from Des Lynam in the early 2000s. His salary reflects this high status, with the former Everton star earning an impressive £1.35 million a year. This amount is around £500,000 more than the BBC’s highest paid salary, Zoe Ball, and stands out despite her long tenure at the broadcaster.

Lineker maintains an estimated net worth of around £30 million, supported primarily by broadcasting income. However, his value remains intact even after accepting a pay cut from £1.75 million in 2021. He has used his experience playing for top clubs such as Tottenham and Barcelona to build a media career where his expertise has been sought after by the likes of TNT Sports, NBC and Al Jazeera.

Rumors have been swirling about Lineker’s replacement, with Mark Chapman emerging as a likely candidate, but these discussions are still speculative. However, Lineker will not step away from the spotlight completely, as he will continue to cover the FA Cup and also be responsible for the BBC’s content in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup.

Lineker expressed his delight after announcing his new 18-month contract. “I am delighted to continue our long association with BBC Sport and would like to thank everyone who has made this possible.”In addition to his broadcasting duties, Lineker also worked with Alan Shearer and Micah. His other endeavors, including the popular podcast Rest Is Football with Richards, keep him connected to a wide audience.
