Gary Sinise stepped back from Hollywood due to personal challenges. He made this decision to care for his wife, Moira Harris, and his late son, McCanna Anthony Sinise, during their battles with cancer. Sinise paused his acting career in 2019 and moved to Nashville in 2021.
His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, and his son faced a rare spinal cancer called Chordoma. Sinise described this period as overwhelming. He managed multiple responsibilities, including caring for his mother, who was alone after his father had a stroke.
Fortunately, Moira is now cancer-free. However, McCanna’s illness was especially tough. He was diagnosed in 2018 and died at 33 earlier this year. Sinise emphasized the difficulty of finding treatments for McCanna. He said, “Trying to find drugs and doctors… was like a full-time job.” As McCanna’s condition worsened, he needed more support.
Sinise officially left Hollywood after appearing in 2020 projects, including 13 Reasons Why and Joe Bell. He explained that traveling for work was not an option given the family’s situation.
After McCanna’s death, Sinise honored his son’s final wish by releasing his music. Earlier this month, he released Resurrection & Revival: Part 2. Sinise shared how rewarding it was to see McCanna achieve his goal of recording music.
