Venezuelan fuel stations will begin dispensing two types of gasoline starting in April 2026, according to a report from Diario Primicia. The change marks a shift in the country’s fuel distribution policy, introducing a premium-grade option alongside the existing regular gasoline. The move aims to address longstanding disparities in fuel quality and consumer access across different regions of the country.

The announcement was confirmed by officials from Venezuela’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, who stated that the dual-fuel system will be rolled out nationwide over the coming months. Regular gasoline, which has been the standard offering at most stations, will continue to be available for general use. The new premium gasoline, formulated with higher octane levels and improved additives, will be targeted at vehicles requiring enhanced engine performance and efficiency.

Authorities emphasized that the introduction of premium gasoline does not mean the discontinuation of regular fuel. Instead, the policy is designed to provide consumers with a choice based on their vehicle specifications and driving needs. Stations will be required to clearly label both fuel types at the pump to avoid confusion and ensure proper usage.

The decision follows years of feedback from mechanics, transportation unions and consumer advocacy groups who have reported engine knocking, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased maintenance costs linked to inconsistent fuel quality. In recent years, Venezuela has struggled with fuel shortages and distribution challenges, particularly in rural and border areas, prompting calls for reform in the national energy sector.

Industry analysts note that the shift could help reduce long-term wear on modern engines, especially those imported or manufactured after 2020, which often require higher-octane fuel to operate optimally. However, concerns remain about pricing equity, as premium gasoline is expected to carry a higher cost per liter than the regular variant.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mining has not yet released official pricing details for the two gasoline types but stated that any price adjustments will be subject to government regulation to prevent market speculation. Fuel prices in Venezuela have historically been subsidized, though recent economic pressures have led to periodic adjustments aimed at balancing domestic consumption with foreign exchange constraints.

Fuel station operators have been instructed to update their storage and dispensing infrastructure to accommodate both fuel types without cross-contamination. Training programs for station attendants are also being developed to ensure correct handling and customer guidance during the transition.

As of mid-April 2026, pilot stations in Caracas, Maracaibo, and Valencia have begun offering both gasoline types, with a full national rollout expected by July. The government plans to monitor consumption patterns and engine performance data over the first six months to assess the impact of the dual-fuel system on vehicle efficiency and emissions.

Diario Primicia reported that the initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize Venezuela’s downstream petroleum sector, which has faced decades of underinvestment and operational strain. While the country remains one of the world’s largest holders of proven oil reserves, refining capacity and fuel distribution have lagged due to sanctions, maintenance backlogs, and fluctuating investment flows.

Officials reiterated that the introduction of premium gasoline is not a sign of increased fuel abundance but rather a step toward better matching fuel quality to vehicle demand. They urged the public to consult their vehicle manuals and follow station signage to ensure they select the appropriate fuel type.
