The Supreme Court‍ on⁣ Tuesday declined to‍ interfere with the construction of a passenger jetty and terminal near Mumbai’s Gateway of India. The ⁤court rejected ‍a plea⁣ challenging a Bombay High Court order that had ⁤refused to stay the project. The high court ‍is scheduled to hear ‍the matter on June 16.

Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, presiding over ⁢the bench with Justice Augustine george Masih, highlighted the potential‍ benefits of such infrastructure projects for the city. Gavai referenced the coastal road project as an example of infrastructure improvements that faced initial opposition but ultimately proved beneficial, reducing travel time significantly.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing Maharashtra, affirmed that the project had secured all⁢ required permissions. The petitioners’ counsel, however, argued that the project, slated for completion within two years, would primarily benefit a select group and lacked proper public consultation and clearances. They claimed the plan was fast-tracked in 2025.

bhati ⁣refuted the claim that the facility⁣ would cater ⁣exclusively to VIPs,assuring the court that it is a public infrastructure project intended for daily ‍commuters. The Chief justice responded to the opposition with a remark likening it to a⁤ “not in my front yard” ⁢sentiment.

‍ “Something good‍ is happening for the city. Everybody opposed the coastal‍ road. Now you see what the benefit of the road is: A person from South ⁤Mumbai can ⁤reach Versova in 40 minutes. Earlier, it used to take three hours,” CJI B R Gavai observed.
