Harvard University has announced its Women’s Volleyball Class of 2030, featuring standout recruit Kayla Nwabueze. The addition of Nwabueze brings a highly decorated athlete to the program, as she arrives following a distinguished high school career in Michigan.
Nwabueze, a 6-foot-2 athlete who played as both a middle blocker and outside hitter, was named the 2025-26 Gatorade Michigan Volleyball Player of the Year. This honor recognizes the top high school athlete in the state based on athletic excellence, academic achievement, and exemplary character.
Athletic Performance and High School Career
During her senior season at Bloomfield Hills High School, Nwabueze played a pivotal role in leading the Black Hawks to a 39-6 record and an appearance in the Division 1 state championship match. Her statistical contributions during that season included 751 kills, 358 digs, 56 service aces, 48 assists, and 43 blocks.
Her efficiency at the net was marked by a .491 kill percentage and a .372 hitting percentage. Beyond her single-season success, Nwabueze concluded her prep volleyball career with a cumulative total of 2,217 kills, 1,127 digs, and 396 blocks.
In addition to her high school achievements, Nwabueze competed with the Legacy Volleyball Club and MiElite. Her performance earned her a selection as an American Volleyball Coaches Association Second Team All-American.
Academic and Community Contributions
Nwabueze’s recruitment to Harvard is supported by a strong academic record, having maintained a weighted 3.96 GPA at the International Academy.
Her commitment to community service includes volunteering as an assistant at a pediatric dental office and serving as support staff for multiple community hospitals. She further contributed to the sport by creating her own beginning volleyball clinic and donating her time as a youth volleyball coach.
As part of the Gatorade Player of the Year award, Nwabueze was granted the opportunity to provide a grant to a social impact partner. She chose to donate to the Super Spikers Volleyball Club located in Abuja, Nigeria.
Context of Michigan Volleyball Excellence
Nwabueze’s achievement as the 2025-26 Player of the Year follows the success of other top Michigan prospects. The 2024-2025 Gatorade Michigan Volleyball Player of the Year was Campbell Flynn, a 6-foot-3 setter and outside hitter from Mercy High School in Farmington. Flynn, who recorded 1,973 assists and 737 kills over her prep career, signed to play for the University of Nebraska.
The transition of these elite athletes to the collegiate level highlights the strength of the Michigan high school volleyball circuit, with Nwabueze now joining the ranks of the Class of 2030 at Harvard.
