Gauff Finds Winning Form Again
Following her triumphant second Grand Slam singles title at Roland Garros in June, Gauff experienced a brief dip in form, suffering opening-round losses in Berlin and Wimbledon. Her first match of the Canadian Open also proved to be a test, requiring a third-set tiebreak to overcome former World No. 7 Danielle Collins.
Kudermetova, a former World No. 9, provided another stern challenge, but Gauff demonstrated her resilience by dominating the deciding set after dropping the first. With this win,Gauff is now just one victory away from reaching her fourth Omnium Banque Nationale quarterfinal in her five tournament appearances, showcasing her consistent performance at this event.
A Tale of Two Sets and a Decisive Third
The match began with Gauff holding a promising 4-1 lead in the first set. However, Kudermetova mounted a comeback, and at 4-4, Gauff faltered, losing five of the next eight points, with double faults proving costly. Kudermetova capitalized on these opportunities, firing powerful groundstroke winners to clinch the opening set.The second set saw Gauff continue to struggle with her serve, committing three more double faults in the opening game to hand Kudermetova a important set-and-a-break advantage. Yet, the tenacious Gauff began to shift the momentum. She fought back, breaking Kudermetova to level the score at 3-3 with a decisive forehand return winner.
Gauff had to dig deep to save break points in both the 4-4 and 5-5 service games, narrowly preventing Kudermetova from serving for the match. Ultimately, Gauff held on to lead 6-5, and Kudermetova faltered under pressure, netting a backhand smash to concede the second set to the American.
Seizing the momentum,Gauff took control in the final set, breaking Kudermetova at love to establish a commanding 2-0 lead. She maintained her dominance throughout the decider, ultimately closing out the match with an efficient 5-for-10 break point conversion rate.More updates to follow…
