Essential Water Safety Principles: Building a Foundation for Prevention
These recent events are not isolated occurrences but rather potent reminders of fundamental water safety principles that every individual, nonetheless of age or experience, must internalize.
Objective Self-Assessment: Know Your Limits
The most crucial element of water safety is an honest and objective assessment of one’s own swimming abilities and physical condition. Open water, unlike a controlled pool environment, presents unpredictable currents, varying depths, and potential obstacles.
Swimming Proficiency: Be realistic about your swimming skills. if you are not a strong swimmer, avoid deep or fast-moving water.
Physical Condition: Fatigue, illness, or the effects of alcohol or drugs can severely impair judgment and physical capabilities. never swim when under the influence of any substance. Environmental Awareness: Understand the specific conditions of the water body you are entering. Research currents, water temperature, and potential hazards before you go.

The VUGD’s advice regarding life jackets is paramount, especially for boating activities.
For Boaters: always wear a properly fitting life jacket when on a boat, regardless of your swimming ability. A life jacket can be the difference between life and death in the event of capsizing or falling overboard.
For Children: Life jackets should be mandatory for all children when near or on the water. Ensure the jacket is the correct size and securely fastened. Beyond Boating: Consider wearing a life jacket for other water activities like kayaking, paddleboarding,or even when fishing from a boat, especially if you are not a confident swimmer.
Responsible Behavior and Supervision
Water safety extends beyond individual actions to encompass responsible behavior and vigilant supervision. Never Swim Alone: Always swim with a buddy. If an emergency occurs, your companion can seek help or provide assistance.
Supervise children Closely: Never leave children unattended near water, even for a moment. Designate a responsible adult to actively supervise children at all times.
