gavin Creel Fellowships Support Emerging Theatre Actors in NYC
Updated june 11, 2025
The American Theatre Wing, in collaboration wiht celia Keenan-Bolger, Sara bareilles, Catherine Brunell, and other friends, has announced the Gavin Creel Fellowships. This new annual program will award $25,000 each to five emerging theater actors, honoring the memory of Gavin Creel, the Tony-winning artist and mentor.
Creel, who benefited from guidance early in his career, wanted to support the next generation of actors. He was particularly concerned about the financial and systemic hurdles they face when starting out.His vision was a program that would ease their transition from college to a professional career, especially for those moving to New York City.
Each year, a panel of Creel’s colleagues will review applications and select five emerging theater actors who are beginning their careers in New York City. The fellowship includes the $25,000 grant, mentorship from an industry professional, networking events with Broadway leaders, access to American Theatre Wing programs, complimentary tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, and attendance at the Tony Awards as seat fillers. This thorough support aims to foster the next generation of theater artists and help them establish a solid foundation for their careers.
“Toward the end of Gavin’s life, we had a lot of conversations about his legacy,” Celia Keenan-Bolger said.”When I asked him about starting a foundation in his name, he talked about the challenges facing young actors who don’t come from wealthy families and how hard it is to move to New York City and pursue a career in the theatre.”
Keenan-Bolger added that she hopes the fellowship will provide financial support, a sense of community, and belonging, values that Creel cherished.she expressed gratitude to the American Theatre Wing for their support in creating a home for the fellowship.
“To be able to play this role in extending Gavin Creel’s amazing life and legacy is beyond meaningful,” said Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing.
The Gavin Creel Fellowship team is currently accepting donations to build a $3 million endowment. This endowment will support the program’s infrastructure and funding, with the goal of launching the program in 2026.Details about qualifications, applications, and the selection panel will be announced later. Those interested in supporting the fellowship can text GAVIN to 44321 or visit the American Theatre Wing website.
