Newsom Eyes 2028 Presidential Run, Navigates Political Landscape
California Governor Gavin Newsom is increasingly positioning himself as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race, a possibility he has not dismissed. As his final year in office approaches, Newsom has embarked on a national tour aimed at bolstering Democratic support, particularly in states traditionally considered Republican strongholds. This activity, coupled with a recent book tour, has fueled speculation about his ambitions beyond California.
Newsom’s strategy appears to involve directly confronting the political right, most notably former President Donald Trump. Newsom initially noted the geographical distance between them – “I’m San Francisco now, she’s LA” – before adding, “fate will determine that.” He emphasized that he has “never gotten in the way of her ambition, ever,” and doesn’t foresee doing so in the future.
Despite this, Newsom acknowledged the possibility of a direct contest. “Yeah I just – that’s fate. I don’t – you know, you can only control what you can control,” he said. This suggests a willingness to compete if the circumstances align, while simultaneously attempting to avoid directly challenging Harris’s aspirations.
Harris herself has not ruled out another presidential run, having previously sought the nomination. Her career trajectory mirrors Newsom’s in some respects, having served as district attorney in San Francisco, then as California’s attorney general, and later as a U.S. Senator before becoming Vice President.
