gaza Reels from deadly Strikes as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens; West Bank Church Attacked
GAZA CITY,Gaza Strip – Central Gaza bore teh brunt of a series of Israeli airstrikes over the past day, resulting in important casualties, including women and children, according to al-Awda Hospital. The hospital reported that 12 people were killed in one strike, identified as police official Omar Aqel, along wiht his relatives, including two children and five women. Further strikes in Bureij and along Salah El Din street claimed the lives of two more individuals and a child, respectively. In Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, at least four people died in a house bombing, while another strike on a cart in northern Gaza’s Tal al-hawa killed four more.
Israel’s military stated it had targeted approximately 90 sites across Gaza in the preceding 24 hours but offered no specific comment on the individual strikes.
Humanitarian Crisis Intensifies Amidst Ongoing Conflict
The escalating violence exacerbates the already catastrophic humanitarian crisis gripping gaza, home to over 2 million Palestinians. Distribution of aid at Gaza Health Facility (GHF) sites is frequently described as chaotic, with reports of food boxes left on the ground and desperate crowds surging to collect supplies. The current conflict, now in its 21st month, was initiated by hamas militants who stormed southern israel on October 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.Currently, 50 hostages remain, with fewer than half believed to be alive.
The Gaza Health Ministry, part of the Hamas government, reports that Israel’s military offensive has resulted in the deaths of over 58,000 Palestinians, though it does not specify the number of militants among the casualties. The ministry claims that more than half of those killed are women and children. despite its affiliation, the United Nations and other international organizations consider the Gaza Health Ministry the most reliable source for casualty data.
Ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated in Qatar, have reportedly yielded no breakthroughs. Relatives of hostages continue to advocate for their release and an end to the war. Efrat Machikawa, a relative of a released hostage, voiced the sentiment at a weekly rally in Tel Aviv, stating, “After 652 days, it is indeed time to do what is right for Israel: Bring all 50 hostages home and end this war.” Thousands later marched to the U.S. Embassy to demand a ceasefire agreement.
West Bank Church Attacked Amidst Rising Settler Violence
In a separate incident in the occupied West Bank, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee visited the Palestinian Christian village of Taybeh. Residents allege that extremist Israeli settlers set fire to the Church of St. George on July 9. Ambassador Huckabee, an evangelical Christian known for his strong support of Israel, condemned the attack, labeling it ”an act of terror and it’s a crime” to desecrate a place of worship.
The West Bank has witnessed a significant increase in settler violence since the commencement of the war in Gaza. Palestinians contend that Israeli security forces have been largely ineffective in curbing this violence, and perpetrators often face little to no punishment.
