Nine children, part of a family of doctors, were killed in an Israeli strike in Khan Younes, according to reports from the Agence France-Presse and the Associated Press on May 24, 2025. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the incident is under review.
The victims, ranging in age from seven months to 12 years, were children of Dr. Hamdi Al-Najjar and dr. Alaa Al-Najjar. Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense, told AFP that the bodies, some charred, were recovered from the Al-Najjar home in the Gizan Al-Najjar neighborhood after what he described as an Israeli strike.
Alaa Najjar, a pediatrician at nasser Hospital, rushed home from her shift to find her house ablaze, according to Ahmad Al-Farra, head of the hospital’s pediatric department, as reported by the AP.Her husband was severely injured,and their 11-year-old son is in critical condition,Al-Farra added. Khalil Al-Dokran, a spokesman for the Gaza health ministry, told the AP that two of the children were found under the rubble.
The Israeli military stated that it targeted suspects operating from a structure near its troops and described Khan Younes as a “dangerous war zone.” The IDF added that civilians had been evacuated from the area and that the “allegation regarding damage caused to uninvolved civilians is under review.”
“Yesterday, Friday, May 23, 2025, our teams transferred the bodies of nine martyred children, some of whom were charred, from the house of Dr. Hamdi Al-Najjar and his wife, Dr. Alaa Al-najjar,” Mahmoud Bassal, Gaza Civil defense Spokesman said.
