Gaza: 9 Children of Doctor Killed in Israeli Strikes
Gaza Conflict: Aid Deliveries, Hospital Attacks intensify Amidst Fighting
Israeli strikes in gaza have killed 79 people in the last 24 hours, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry added that hospitals in northern Gaza are now inaccessible. The renewed fighting comes as limited aid deliveries resume after weeks of restrictions.
In Khan Younis, nine children of a pediatrician, alaa Najjar, were killed in a strike. Ahmad al-Farra, head of Nasser Hospital’s pediatric department, said Najjar’s husband was severely wounded, and their surviving son is in critical condition.
The Israeli military said it targeted suspects operating near its forces in Khan Younis, calling it a “dangerous war zone.” They stated civilians had been evacuated and that the incident is under review. The air force reported striking over 100 targets in Gaza in the past day.
The health Ministry reports the war’s death toll has reached 53,901 since Oct. 7. Since fighting resumed on march 18, 3,747 Gazans have died. The ministry does not differentiate between civilian and combatant deaths.
Israel’s blockade of Gaza, affecting over 2 million people, began in early March. Limited aid trucks have entered Gaza since Monday, with 388 trucks entering, according to COGAT,the Israeli defense body overseeing aid. Before the blockade, about 600 trucks entered daily during a ceasefire.
Warnings of famine prompted international pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to allow aid. The U.N. and partners oppose Israel’s proposed aid distribution system, claiming it could weaponize food. A letter obtained by the AP suggests Israel may allow aid groups to manage non-food assistance.
Hospitals in gaza are reporting renewed attacks. The Health Ministry said 11 security personnel are trapped at the European Hospital in southern Gaza due to gunfire and airstrikes. Dr. Saleh Hams, director of nursing, said patients were evacuated after a May 13 strike. The security staff remained to prevent looting at the hospital, which offers neurosurgery, cardiac care, and cancer treatment.
Israel demands hamas release the remaining 58 hostages and disarm. Hamas seeks a lasting ceasefire, prisoner exchange, and Israeli withdrawal. Netanyahu rejects these terms and aims to maintain control over Gaza.
“the Israeli government and its leader have a clear choice: deal or war, saving lives or abandonment,” Liran Berman, brother of hostages Gali and Ziv Berman said.
