Gaza Aid Boat: Israeli Military Seizure
Israeli forces seized a yacht attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, quickly escalating tensions in the region. Climate activist Greta Thunberg and EU lawmaker Rima Hassan were among those detained when the Israeli military intercepted the Gaza-bound flotilla, a clear move to enforce the naval blockade initiated in 2007. The yacht, carrying a symbolic aid shipment, was stopped in international waters, a maneuver the Israeli government has defended. The seizure highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the UN warns of widespread famine. Israel’s actions, including the detention of crew members, have drawn condemnation from pro-Palestinian supporters who vow to continue challenging the blockade. Updated June 09, 2025
Israeli forces intercepted a pro-Palestinian flotilla, the Freedom Flotilla, in international waters early Monday, preventing it from reaching Gaza. The British-flagged yacht, Madleen, was carrying a symbolic shipment of aid and aimed to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in gaza.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) reported the vessel was boarded before reaching Gaza. The Israeli Foreign ministry confirmed the yacht was under Israeli control.
Among the 12 crew members were Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Rima Hassan,a French member of the European parliament. Hassan posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the Israeli army arrested the crew around 2 a.m.
The yacht carried a small amount of humanitarian aid, including rice and baby formula. A photo showed the crew wearing life jackets with their hands raised.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated Sunday that he ordered the military to stop the Madleen, calling the mission a propaganda effort supporting Hamas.
Israel imposed a naval blockade on Gaza after Hamas took control in 2007. The blockade has continued through multiple conflicts, including the current war that began after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths, according to Israeli figures.
Health officials in Gaza say that more than 54,000 Palestinians have died as Israel’s military campaign began. The United Nations has warned of widespread famine among gaza’s population of over 2 million.
francesca Albanese, the United Nations’ special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, supported the Freedom Flotilla and urged other boats to challenge the Gaza blockade.
“The crew of the Freedom Flotilla was arrested by the Israeli army in international waters around 2 a.m.,” Hassan posted on X.
