Former President Donald Trump has voiced strong criticism of the current aid distribution system in Gaza, describing it as “flawed” and “militarized,” and has called for Israel to ensure the delivery of food to starving Palestinians while preventing Hamas from diverting aid.
“Flawed” and “Militarized” Aid system
In an interview with NBC, Trump characterized the aid system managed by contractors at the Gaza humanitarian fund (GHF) as deeply problematic. He stated that the system had “turned aid distributions into regular bloodbaths,” highlighting the chaotic and dangerous conditions under which aid is being delivered.Trump expressed his hope that israel would take a more active role in overseeing the distribution process. “We wanted Israel to watch over it,” he said, emphasizing his belief that “good management” is key to preventing the theft of vital supplies. He added, ”Hopefully, the israelis will provide that.”
Concerns Over Aid Efficacy and Hamas Diversion
The former president reiterated his administration’s significant financial contributions to the GHF,stating,”We gave it to people who,in theory, are watching over it fairly closely.” However,he expressed disappointment with the lack of visible results, questioning the efficacy of the aid provided.
“It’s a shame because I don’t see the results of it,” Trump remarked. He pointed to Hamas as a primary culprit for aid diversion, claiming, “Part of the problem is that hamas is taking the money and they’re taking the food.”
However, United Nations and other aid agencies operating in Gaza have stated they have not observed their aid being diverted by Hamas. They attribute much of the looting to armed gangs, some of whom israel has reportedly backed to counter Hamas.
Trump on the situation in Gaza
When asked by reporters about Republican Rep. marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent characterization of Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide, Trump responded with a somber acknowledgment of the dire humanitarian situation. “It’s terrible what’s occurring there. It’s a terrible thing. People are very hungry,” he stated.Trump described Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “a competent person” and reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that “people get fed.” his comments underscore a complex stance, acknowledging the severe humanitarian crisis while also expressing confidence in Israeli leadership to manage the situation and prevent aid diversion.
