Gaza Aid Crisis: New System Sparks Chaos, Violence, and Starvation

Updated June 11, ⁣2025

As⁣ the collapse of the ceasefire, the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza has been severely restricted, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. A new aid delivery ⁣system, spearheaded by the Gaza Humanitarian⁢ Foundation (GHF),has been implemented, but ‍aid workers⁤ on the ground report that it has led to chaos, violence, and widespread starvation.

Salma Altaweel,a field-office ⁣manager for the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in Gaza City, described the challenges her ‍organization⁣ faces ‍in providing essential ⁢services. Despite working in “hibernation mode” ‍due to the difficulty of movement, the NRC continues to provide drinking water, clothing vouchers, informal education, and legal support.

Before the new system, aid was coordinated by U.N. agencies and international NGOs. trucks woudl deliver supplies to warehouses, ‍and local organizations ‍would distribute them based on established criteria. People received aid “wiht dignity, and without a crowd,” Altaweel said. Though, the quantities were never sufficient.

The situation deteriorated sharply after March when Israel announced a total cutoff of aid. By May, markets were empty, and people faced real starvation. Although ⁣some aid has resumed, it remains insufficient.

The new⁢ aid system, with the GHF distributing supplies at a limited number of sites, has created hazardous ‍conditions. Altaweel noted that Israeli forces have killed and injured Gazans at these distribution points. “There is no humanity in these areas,” ⁢she said. “Humanitarian principles are not being applied.”

The NRC is not directing people to these sites due to the extreme risks. ⁢Instead, they are trying to provide support where they can, but the lack of shelter items is a major⁢ concern.⁣ Relocation orders issued by the Israeli military force people to flee thier homes with little or no belongings, increasing their need for tents, bedding, and clothing.

“We⁢ are trying to ‍do our⁤ best to ⁤support them, but we cannot give them direction to go to these areas. They are so risky. They’re killing people on a daily basis in those areas. There is no humanity in these areas. Humanitarian principles are not being applied.‍ So we are not guiding anyone to⁤ go there.”

What’s next

Aid organizations continue to advocate for increased access⁤ to Gaza and the delivery of essential shelter items. The focus remains on providing support to displaced families and ensuring the safety of civilians seeking humanitarian assistance. The need for a sustainable and dignified aid delivery⁤ system is⁣ more urgent than ever.
