Gaza Aid Delivery Hampered by Access, Restrictions
Updated May 28, 2025
Despite a recent influx, the amount of humanitarian aid reaching Gaza remains “vastly insufficient” following nearly three months of a complete blockade, according to Jens laerke, spokesperson for the UN aid coordination office (OCHA). While UN staff remain in Gaza to coordinate with Israeli authorities for supply retrieval via the Kerem Shalom crossing, meaningful obstacles persist.
Laerke emphasized that the UN isn’t involved in the Israeli aid plan, the Gaza Humanitarian Fund, calling it a “distraction” from the core issue: reopening all Gaza crossings, ensuring a secure environment, and expediting approvals for emergency supplies waiting at the border. The UN maintains that all types of aid, not just “cherry-picked” items, must be allowed through.
In New York, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric echoed the call for a “meaningful scale-up” of humanitarian operations to prevent famine and address the needs of all civilians. he referenced a detailed plan, supported by member states, to deliver aid to the population.
The World Food Programme (WFP) reported that 294 trucks reached Kerem Shalom from Port Ashdod as of Monday. However, media reports indicated that protesters attempted to block aid trucks from leaving the Israeli port on Tuesday. The WFP stated that the current pace is too slow to meet the overwhelming needs, adding,”Gaza families are at a breaking point, amid intensified fighting, waves of evacuation orders and population displacement.”
The UN agency has over 130,000 metric tons of food ready for distribution, but an immediate surge in daily aid trucks and unrestricted access are critical. Meanwhile, UNRWA reports that no supplies prepared by the agency have reached Gaza since March 2, despite having over 3,000 trucks of food and medicine in Jordan and Egypt.
Juliette Touma, UNRWA Director of Communications, said the agency is running out of essential medicines for chronic and childhood diseases. Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini has urged Israel to provide evidence supporting claims of hamas infiltration within UNRWA.
Touma noted that despite requests, no evidence has been shared to substantiate accusations against the agency and its personnel, which she says harms the agency’s reputation and endangers staff.
What’s next
The UN continues to press for open crossing points and adherence to international law to ensure humanitarian operations can proceed without delay, averting further crisis in Gaza.
