IRC Criticizes Israeli-Led Rafah Aid Initiative Amid Gaza Food Crisis
Updated May 28, 2025
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has voiced strong concerns regarding the Israeli-led aid initiative in Rafah, citing a lack of inclusion and a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Ciaran Donnelly, senior vice president at the IRC, described the situation as dire, echoing warnings from other humanitarian agencies.
According to the IRC, over two million people in Gaza are experiencing acute food insecurity, with nearly 500,000 facing catastrophic, famine-level conditions. Reports from the ground indicate that families are struggling to secure even basic sustenance.
Donnelly stressed the importance of scaling up aid efforts in a way that involves experienced humanitarian organizations. He emphasized the need for transparent, safe, and accountable aid delivery that respects the dignity of recipients. The current aid initiative, though, has largely excluded these organizations from its design and implementation, hindering thier ability to provide essential programs.
The chaotic scenes that we have seen in Rafah today really just bear out the warnings that the IRC and other humanitarian agencies have been putting out for the last number of weeks around this israeli-led aid initiative.
What’s next
The IRC continues to advocate for a more inclusive and effective approach to aid delivery in Gaza, urging collaboration with experienced humanitarian partners to address the urgent needs of the population.
