Israeli strikes Kill Gazans as netanyahu Announces Hostage Recovery
At least 60 Palestinians died Wednesday from Israeli gunfire and airstrikes in Gaza, according to local health officials.Many of the casualties occurred near an aid distribution site run by the U.S. and the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in central Gaza.
Medical personnel at Shifa and al-quds hospitals reported that 25 people died and dozens sustained injuries as they approached a food distribution center close to the former Netzarim settlement. The Israeli military stated its forces fired warning shots at a group posing a threat near the Netzarim Corridor, adding that the area is an active combat zone and that reports of injuries are under review.
Health officials at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, later reported that Israeli gunfire killed at least 14 people near another GHF site in Rafah. The GHF stated it was unaware of the incidents but works closely with Israeli authorities to maintain safe passage and stresses the importance of following instructions.
The GHF reported distributing 2.5 million meals Wednesday, its largest single-day delivery since operations began in late May, bringing the total to over 16 million meals. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the military and Shin Bet recovered the bodies of two hostages from Gaza. One was identified as Yair Yaakov. The military said Islamic Jihad militants abducted and killed Yaakov, 59, during the Oct. 7 attack on southern israel in 2023. His partner and two children were also taken hostage but later released.
The military has notified the family of the second hostage, whose identity remains undisclosed. Both bodies were recovered from the Khan Younis area.
