A United Nations commission has accused Israel of potential war crimes and crimes against humanity, specifically the extermination of Palestinians, stemming from attacks on schools, religious sites, and cultural landmarks in Gaza. the UN Autonomous International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied palestinian Territory stated in a report that these actions have effectively decimated Gaza’s education system and destroyed over half of its religious and cultural sites.
The commission’s report highlights attacks on educational facilities that resulted in civilian casualties, constituting war crimes such as directing attacks against civilians and willful killing. The report further asserts that Israeli security forces committed the crime against humanity of extermination by killing civilians sheltering in schools and religious sites.
Navi Pillay, chair of the commission, stated that there are increasing indications of a concerted campaign by Israel to obliterate Palestinian life in Gaza. She emphasized the plight of children in Gaza, who are forced to focus on survival amid attacks, starvation, and inhumane conditions.
The commission also addressed Israeli actions in the West Bank, including East jerusalem, and within Israel itself.it noted that Israel has done little to prevent or prosecute Jewish settlers who intentionally target educational facilities and students to terrorize Palestinian communities.
