The Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations, riyad Mansour, delivered a stark message to the UN Security Council today, asserting that Israel demonstrably disregards the council’s pronouncements and that decisive action is urgently needed. His plea comes amidst ongoing conflict and escalating humanitarian concerns in Gaza.
Frustration with inaction
Mansour expressed deep frustration with the current situation, stating it is “undeniable” that Israel does not heed the concerns voiced by UNSC members. He emphasized that statements of support, while appreciated, are “not sufficient” to address the crisis.
“You have to act. You have to do something about it. You have to stop it,” Mansour implored the council, highlighting the urgent need for tangible measures to de-escalate the conflict and protect civilian lives. He argued that the time for mere discussion has passed, and concrete steps are required to influence the situation on the ground.
Mansour outlined a potential pathway to lasting peace and stability, centered around a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. He proposed that the Palestinian Authority should assume governmental duties in the region, supported by international and regional assistance.
This transition, he clarified, would necessitate hamas relinquishing its weapons and ceasing hostilities. Mansour believes this handover of power would pave the way for an “irreversible pathway to the establishment of a Palestinian state,” offering a long-term solution to the ongoing conflict.
The Stakes are High
Addressing the Security Council, Mansour underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that the actions taken today will “determine the fate of millions of people tomorrow.” He affirmed the willingness of the Palestinian Authority to collaborate with international partners to bring an immediate end to the war.He urged the council to recognize the profound consequences of their decisions and to act decisively to prevent further suffering and loss of life. Mansour’s address served as a powerful call for accountability and a renewed commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.
