The United Nations is scaling up food aid to Gaza, but continues to face significant obstacles in delivering essential supplies and healthcare to the region. As of Saturday, february 24, 2024, UN partners were preparing and distributing 558,000 daily meals to civilians in need, with plans to increase this number by 40,000 meals each day.
Despite the increase in food planning, the overall humanitarian situation remains dire. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric warned that health services are “heavily constrained” due to insecurity and displacement orders.in Deir Al-Balah, a critical shortage of functional ambulances is hindering the ability to provide care to the thousands of people requiring medical assistance.
Infrastructure Damage and Obstruction of Aid
The physical infrastructure of Gaza is severely damaged, further complicating aid delivery. According to the UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 77% of the road networks in Gaza have sustained damage, obstructing the movement of humanitarian aid.
On Sunday, February 25, 2024, only four out of 17 UN-coordinated aid missions were successfully facilitated by israeli authorities. Seven missions were denied outright, including one intended to deliver vital water tanks to the northern Gaza Strip, an area particularly impacted by shortages. Four missions were impeded while in transit, and two were cancelled by the organizations planning them.
Despite these challenges, three humanitarian missions were completed, including the collection of fuel and food cargo from the Kerem Shalom/Karem Abu Salem crossing. This crossing remains a crucial, though insufficient, point of entry for aid.
Calls for Unimpeded Access
The UN continues to advocate for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza.”Aid should flow at scale through multiple crossings into and within Gaza, including the north,” Mr. Dujarric emphasized. The current level of access is insufficient to meet the escalating needs of the population.
