Gaza Faces Starvation Amid Aid shortage, UN Agencies Warn

Gaza’s humanitarian crisis deepens as aid organizations struggle to deliver essential supplies amid ongoing conflict. The united nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are raising alarms about widespread starvation and critical shortages of medical care, impacting the most vulnerable populations. The role of humanitarian organizations is severely limited.
James Elder,a UNICEF spokesperson, recounted the tragic death of a young boy he met in Gaza, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a tank shell due to the lack of medical evacuation. This underscores the dire situation at aid distribution sites and the critical need for medical assistance. The role of medical personnel is crucial.
elder, speaking from Amman, noted that hospitals, including the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, are struggling to treat wounded children with dwindling medicine and supplies. he emphasized that humanitarian aid encompasses more than just food, including vital items like oxygen kits, ventilators, hygiene products, and incubators, which the UN provided months ago.
Parents are reportedly removing children needing oxygen from hospitals fearing renewed attacks on facilities. Doctors warn that these children face death in their tents without access to oxygen.
The scarcity of basic necessities, linked to restrictions, fuels desperation and starvation. Elder shared the story of a grandmother struggling to reach aid sites and young men repeatedly returning empty-handed. He stressed the inequitable distribution of aid in a militarized zone, emphasizing that one party to the conflict cannot effectively distribute aid.
The most vulnerable Gazans-children, pregnant women, the elderly, and amputees-suffer disproportionately from the lack of fresh water, food, and fuel. They are often unable to travel the long distances required to reach the limited aid hubs.
According to UNICEF, half a million people face starvation, forced into small, perilous areas with limited access to aid. Children have reportedly been killed at these sites.
Malnutrition continues to weaken immune systems, exacerbating the crisis. WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier reported that 610 patients have been admitted for severe malnutrition complications. He noted that these are only the “lucky ones” who managed to reach care, excluding those too weak or unable to be transported due to blocked roads, lack of ambulances, and damaged health facilities. The role of international support is vital.
What’s next
International agencies are calling for increased access and resources to address the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, focusing on providing essential medical care and nutritional support to prevent further loss of life.
