Gaza City,Palestine - The already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza has been exacerbated by a deadly shooting incident involving civilians seeking food aid and a new mass displacement order impacting tens of thousands in Deir Al-Balah,according to United Nations agencies. The World Food Programme (WFP) condemned the shooting, which left “countless” Gazans dead, as a “great tragedy” and a severe blow to ongoing relief efforts.
Aid Convoy Shooting Claims Countless Lives
the WFP reported that a large crowd of civilians, desperate for food supplies, were gathered when a shooting commenced, resulting in a significant loss of life. Health authorities corroborated the WFP’s account of the devastating incident.
“The victims were simply trying to access food to feed themselves and their families on the brink of starvation,” the WFP stated, condemning the violence.
Speaking from New York, Ross Smith, WFP’s director of emergencies, described the event as “one of the greatest tragedies we’ve seen for our operations in Gaza and elsewhere while we’re trying to work.”
The UN agency highlighted that the violence occurred “despite assurances from Israeli authorities that humanitarian operational conditions would improve; including that armed forces will not be present nor engage at any stage along humanitarian convoy routes.” The WFP emphasized that without such fundamental guarantees, the continuation of life-saving support across the Gaza Strip is unfeasible. This incident follows reports of 36 people seeking aid being killed near a gaza Humanitarian Foundation hub in the south of the Strip just a day prior.
Deir Al-Balah Evacuation Sparks Shock and Further Displacement
In central Gaza’s Deir Al-Balah, a new mass displacement order issued by the Israeli military has impacted an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 people, marking the first such order as the conflict began on October 7, 2023.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that the order “cuts through Deir Al-Balah all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, further splintering the Strip.” OCHA warned that this action “will limit the ability of the UN and our partners to move safely and effectively within Gaza, choking humanitarian access when it is needed most.”
UN staff remain in Deir Al-Balah across numerous locations, the coordinates of which have been shared with the warring parties. OCHA insisted that “These locations – as with all civilian sites – must be protected, regardless of displacement orders,” as Israeli tanks reportedly advanced into southern and eastern areas of the city. Reports suggest that some remaining hostages seized in Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, may still be held in this area.
Gaza Cut in Two by Displacement Orders
The latest evacuation order means that approximately 88 percent of Gaza is now affected by displacement orders or falls within Israeli-militarized zones. The 2.1 million civilians who have been uprooted multiple times are now concentrated in increasingly limited areas where essential services have collapsed.
“There’s nowhere for [Gazans] to escape. They are trapped,” said Louise Wateridge, UNRWA Senior Emergency Officer. “They cannot leave the Gaza Strip. They’re trying to keep their children alive. They’re trying to keep themselves alive.”
Speaking to A news, Wateridge, a veteran humanitarian, explained the severe lack of food and extremely limited water availability, which drives desperate Gazans to risk their lives for aid. “Children are malnourished, they’re dehydrated, they are dying in front of their [parents’] eyes,” she stated. “The bombs and the strikes are continuing; there’s no way to run, there’s nowhere to hide. There’s no way to escape there.”
