Gaza Aid Deaths Rise Amid Israeli Blockade, Fueling Humanitarian Crisis
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, wiht the death toll among Palestinians seeking aid rising sharply. In the last 24 hours, at least 120 Palestinians have died across the region, bringing the total number of fatalities to 55,104, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ministry also reported that 474 people sustained injuries.
A important number of these deaths, at least 57, occurred at aid distribution points managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). These sites, staffed by U.S. security contractors and guarded by Israeli forces, have become increasingly risky. Since Wednesday morning, over 363 people have been injured at these locations.
Since the GHF distribution centers began operating, 224 people have been killed.The United nations and other aid groups had voiced objections to the GHF’s approach. One executive resigned from the initiative last month,citing violations of humanitarian principles.
Issam Wahdan, a Palestinian man who lost his brother while trying to obtain aid near the Netzarim Corridor, recounted his experience. He told Al Jazeera that he and his brother had repeatedly tried to get food boxes from the GHF, without success. “When we arrived, we where surprised to see quadcopters shooting at us,” Wahdan said. “The quadcopter threw a bomb at us. there were many wounded and martyred people, including my brother.”
“We need humanitarian aid so we have to go to the center. My brother was married and had two boys and one daughter. His youngest is 18 months old,” said Wahdan. “His children are hungry and that forced him to go there to get some aid. When yoru children are hungry, you need to do anything to provide them with food.”
Israel has acknowledged using “warning shots” to manage crowds at GHF sites, claiming that forces only targeted “suspects” approaching troops. However, critics point to mounting evidence suggesting deliberate targeting of civilians, despite claims that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are primarily targeting Hamas.
Chris Newton, a senior analyst with the International Crisis Group, noted the inadequacy of the aid provided. He told Al Jazeera that the rations are closer to those used in starvation experiments than to the minimum calories needed to avoid malnutrition. “The violence, the chaos, and the complete inadequacy of the types and volume of aid being given out are not so much mistakes of the system, but really by design,” Newton said.
The GHF sites were established after Israel imposed a total blockade on humanitarian aid. A May report by the integrated Food Security phase Classification warned that the siege had placed the entire gaza Strip in “Phase 4,” with the population facing severe malnutrition and increased mortality.
UNICEF shared the story of Osama, a 5-year-old boy from Gaza, who now weighs only 5 kilograms due to severe malnutrition. “The recovery of children like Osama is possible only with a long-lasting cease-fire and aid at scale being allowed into Gaza,” UNICEF stated.

Gaza’s Government Media Office accused Israel of deliberately creating chaos and starvation by targeting civilians seeking food. The office stated that killings are carried out by quadcopters, helicopters, and tanks, targeting those trying to obtain food aid for their families.
