Gaza Death Toll 60,000: Famine Warning
Israel Considers Gaza Annexation Amid Stalled Ceasefire Talks and Mounting International Pressure
jerusalem, Israel – As diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza remain stalled, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly considering the annexation of parts of the Gaza Strip. This potential move, aimed at appeasing far-right factions within his coalition, comes as the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates and international criticism of Israel’s military campaign intensifies.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Despite Daily Pauses
Despite Israel’s implementation of 10-hour daily humanitarian pauses on military operations as Sunday, the delivery of essential aid into Gaza has been insufficient to meet the escalating needs of the civilian population. the fighting has continued unabated, wiht the Gaza health ministry reporting at least 112 deaths in the 24 hours preceding Tuesday, including individuals attempting to collect food parcels.
Annexation on the Table as coalition Pressures Mount
According to a report by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Prime Minister Netanyahu is weighing an ultimatum to Hamas: agree to a 60-day ceasefire or face the commencement of israeli annexation of Gaza territories. The initial focus of such a plan would reportedly be the buffer zone Israel has established along the Gaza border.
Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, leader of the Religious Zionist party, has openly hinted at such ambitions. “If I’m still in the government despite this [the entry of humanitarian aid] I must have a reasonable foundation to assume that good things are going to happen,” smotrich stated. He further expressed dissatisfaction with merely re-establishing the Gush Katif Jewish settlement bloc, which was dismantled in 2005. “I don’t want to go back to Gush Katif. It’s too small. It needs to be much bigger, much wider. Gaza allows us to think bigger,” he added.
Military Prepared for Expanded Operations
In parallel with the political considerations, the Israeli military is reportedly developing plans for more extensive operations, including the potential occupation of the entire Gaza Strip or the isolation of Gaza City from the rest of the enclave, should ceasefire negotiations fail. The security cabinet convened on Monday night, but no definitive decisions were announced, suggesting a brief window for diplomatic initiatives to yield results.
Netanyahu Defends Actions Amidst Global Scrutiny
Facing increasing international condemnation, Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a statement in English asserting that Israel is actively working to facilitate the entry of substantial quantities of aid into Gaza, despite the “tough” situation. He accused Hamas of exploiting the situation, claiming the group benefits from “attempting to fuel the perception of a humanitarian crisis” by releasing “unverified numbers” and circulating “carefully staged or manipulated” images.
israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar echoed this sentiment, suggesting that international pressure during critical ceasefire negotiations has inadvertently strengthened Hamas’s negotiating stance.
The ongoing conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, with Hamas’s attack on southern Israel resulting in 1,200 deaths and approximately 250 hostages taken, has led to a notable humanitarian toll in Gaza. According to gaza health authorities, nearly 60,000 Palestinians have been killed since the commencement of Israel’s military campaign.
