Gaza Aid Delivery Risks: Starvation as Potential War Crime

Updated⁤ june 24, 2025

Gaza faces a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with‌ aid delivery severely hampered ⁤by violence and restrictions. The UN human rights office⁢ reports that the weaponization of food, coupled with restricted access to essential services, could constitute a war crime. This comes nearly a month after the Israeli and U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began operations on May 27, bypassing established aid ⁣organizations.

Thameen al-Keetan, spokesperson for the UN human rights office, said that GHF distribution points are frequently associated with chaos and shootings as desperate Gazans seek supplies. the UN aid coordination office,OCHA,reports daily killings and injuries in Gaza, emphasizing that insufficient humanitarian operations are failing to address critical needs.

Al-Keetan stated that victims at private aid hubs have been “shelled or shot” by the Israel Defense Forces, endangering civilians and worsening the humanitarian situation. At ⁤least 93 people have reportedly been killed by the Israeli army while trying to reach UN and partner‌ aid convoys.

The UN human rights‌ office previously condemned the alleged summary execution of Palestinian staff linked to the GHF by armed men reportedly affiliated with Hamas, calling for accountability.

Women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities ⁤face significant challenges accessing food. Looting of aid convoys is common after months of bombardment and⁤ a near-total blockade on⁣ humanitarian supplies. The UN⁤ human rights office reports that ‍at least 3,000 Palestinians have⁤ been injured in incidents related to non-UN aid hubs and looting.

Despite the ongoing role of the UN and other aid providers, their missions depend on‍ Israeli authorization. ‍Recently, only half of the requested humanitarian operations were approved, hindering the delivery of water, fuel, nutrition services,⁢ and body retrieval, according to Alessandra Vellucci, Director of the Information⁤ Service at UN Geneva.

Jonathan Whittall, Head of OCHA in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,‌ described the situation as “weaponized hunger” and “forced‍ displacement,” potentially leading to the “erasure of Palestinian life from Gaza.”

Telecommunications have been restored after damaged cables ‌were repaired, providing a crucial window for aid coordination. Though, the UN warns that without urgent fuel deliveries, connectivity will soon be lost again. Fuel is essential for emergency rooms, ambulances, water desalination, and pumping stations. Teams are rationing remaining fuel and attempting to retrieve stored stocks.

Access to nasser Medical Complex is limited due to fuel shortages and safety concerns.Field hospitals in ‌Khan Younis have seen a threefold increase in admissions due to access challenges‍ at Nasser, which is‍ overwhelmed with ⁣trauma⁢ patients.

Most of ⁤Gaza⁢ remains under Israeli military displacement orders,‍ including recent orders for two neighborhoods in Khan Younis, reportedly following Palestinian rocket fire. These areas include Al Amal and Nasser hospitals,‍ further hindering⁣ access for patients and medical staff, despite clarifications that the‍ hospitals are not required to⁤ evacuate.

What’s next

The immediate priority is securing fuel deliveries to sustain essential services and ensuring safe and⁢ unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to reach ‍the⁢ most vulnerable populations⁢ in Gaza. The UN continues
