UN⁣ Official Describes ‘Total Destruction’‍ in Gaza,⁢ Urges Accelerated Rebuilding

A United⁤ Nations official on Thursday, January 16, 2026, called‍ for a rapid acceleration⁤ of rebuilding efforts in Gaza, stating that Palestinians are facing “inhumane” conditions ⁤despite ⁢the​ ongoing‍ second‌ phase of a⁣ U.S.-backed cease-fire. ‍The ​assessment comes‌ as the territory grapples with widespread​ devastation​ following ⁣two years of conflict.

Extent of the Damage

Jorge ⁤Moreira da Silva, head of the⁢ U.N. Office for Project Services (UNOPS), described the scale of destruction‍ as unprecedented after visiting the Gaza Strip. He stated, “I wouldn’t have imagined what I saw today, which is total​ destruction, not much is ⁢standing.”

The two-year conflict has ‌resulted in⁣ destruction on a scale​ not previously seen⁣ in Gaza, with large areas reduced to rubble.
