Gaza Displacement: Families Divided Over Leaving Israel-Palestine
## The Al-Rahel Family’s dilemma in Gaza
The al-Rahel family in Gaza City faces a heartbreaking decision as Israel plans to seize Gaza City. Iman al-Rahel,45,prepares for a possible evacuation, recalling the horrors of the previous Israeli invasion beginning in October 2023,when her family sheltered in schools besieged by tanks and snipers in Beit Lahiya.During that time, her son, Abdullah, 23, and her husband were both shot and injured. Iman vividly remembers witnessing “killings, executions, sniping, arrests, body parts, bombardment, and targeted attacks,” and the desperate struggle for survival, forcing them to resort to eating weeds and animal fodder. Having experienced this, she states she woudl evacuate to southern Gaza “without hesitation” if ordered to do so, resolute not to repeat that experience.
However, the family is divided.Iman’s eldest daughter, 24-year-old Ghadeer al-Rahel, vehemently refuses to evacuate south again. She previously fled to the south with her husband and infant daughter in November 2023, experiencing a cycle of displacement from Khan Younis to Rafah, than to al-Mawasi, facing overcrowding, lack of resources, and the humiliation of checkpoints. Ghadeer recounts the immense hardship of being separated from her family for over three months due to dialogue breakdowns, and the illness of her then six-month-old daughter, ayloul, who required hospitalization. She emphasizes the unbearable conditions and isolation she endured, solidifying her resolve to remain in the north, stating, “I will never go south again. Unachievable.”
The disagreement highlights a broader debate among Palestinians in Gaza, where the safety of evacuation is questioned against the difficulties of finding shelter and resources in already overcrowded areas. The family’s discussion underscores the deeply personal and traumatic experiences shaping their perspectives on survival.Despite Ghadeer’s firm stance, her family insists on leaving together, emphasizing their unwillingness to leave her behind.
