Gaza’s Healthcare Crisis: Workers Faint from Hunger Amidst Devastated Medical system
Table of Contents
Gaza is facing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, with healthcare and aid workers reporting fainting spells due to severe hunger and exhaustion. The region’s medical infrastructure has been decimated, leaving medical professionals in an unfeasible situation where they must choose between providing critical care and securing food for their families.
A Grim Reality for Gaza’s Medical Professionals
The situation on the ground in Gaza is dire, as highlighted by recent reports from the UNRWA chief, Philippe Lazzarini. His team has received accounts of healthcare and aid workers collapsing from hunger and exhaustion, a direct consequence of the severe lack of food. These dedicated individuals are being pushed to their absolute limits, facing agonizing choices. Some medical staff have spoken of the agonizing dilemma of deciding whether to remain at work, providing essential medical care, or venturing out into the streets to search for sustenance for their families. This stark reality underscores the depth of the crisis, where basic survival needs are in direct conflict with professional duties.
Further compounding the fear and desperation, manny medical workers are apprehensive about seeking food from distribution sites. These sites, often run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and guarded by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), are currently the sole channels for food and aid to reach civilians. Tragically, as may, the UN has reported that over 1,000 people have lost their lives while attempting to access food from these centers and other humanitarian convoys.
Decimated Healthcare System Under Strain
Gaza’s healthcare system has been systematically dismantled by the ongoing conflict, which has now lasted for 23 months. In May, the World Health Association (WHO) issued a grave warning, stating that a staggering 94% of all hospitals in the Gaza Strip had been damaged or destroyed. Of the 36 hospitals that once served the population, only 19 remained operational, a fraction of the capacity needed to address the immense medical needs.Muath Alser, director of Healthcare Worker Watch,a Palestinian medical organization, painted a grim picture of the current state of affairs. “In recent days, healthcare workers in Gaza have collectively reported unprecedented levels of food insecurity, lowered immunity, repeated infections, severe fatigue, and frequent fainting during surgeries and rescue missions,” he stated. Alser emphasized the urgent need for action, asserting, “We cannot afford mere condemnation. We need urgent action.”
IDF Response and Ongoing Reviews
In response to the escalating crisis, the IDF has stated its commitment to facilitating the distribution of humanitarian aid, aiming to ensure that hospitals in Gaza can continue their vital operations.
Regarding the reported incidents of harm to civilians at distribution facilities, the IDF has indicated that thorough examinations have been conducted by the Southern Command. Instructions have been issued to forces in the field based on lessons learned from these events. The IDF further stated that these incidents are currently under review by the competent authorities within the IDF.
