Escalating Conflict and Mass Displacement
Israeli forces intensified bombardments on Gaza City overnight, signaling an imminent push to seize the enclaveS largest urban centre. This escalation comes ahead of a crucial meeting scheduled for Thursday between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet to finalize plans for the offensive.Thousands of Palestinians are already fleeing their homes in Gaza city, particularly from the Sabra and tuffah neighborhoods, as shelling intensifies. Many are seeking refuge in shelters along the coast, while others are attempting to move to central and southern Gaza.
The situation is dire for civilians. Rabah Abu Elias, a 67-year-old father of seven, poignantly described the impossible choice facing residents: “We are facing a bitter-bitter situation, to die at home or leave and die somewhere else, provided that this war continues, survival is uncertain.” He expressed the widespread frustration with the disconnect between reported truce negotiations and the reality on the ground: “In the news, they speak about a possible truce, on the ground, we only hear explosions and see deaths. To leave Gaza City or not isn’t an easy decision to make.”
Israeli tanks have been steadily advancing towards Gaza City over the past ten days, and officials have stated that evacuation notices will be issued before a ground incursion begins. Brigadier General effie defrin announced on Wednesday that the Israeli military has begun preliminary operations to take control of Gaza City, characterizing Hamas as a “battered and bruised” guerrilla force.
Reservist Mobilization and International Response
In a significant show of force, the Israeli military called up 60,000 reservists on Wednesday, despite international condemnation. While officials clarified that not all reservists will be deployed to combat roles, the mobilization underscores the government’s commitment to the planned offensive. The call-up is expected to take weeks, potentially providing a window for ongoing mediation efforts.
Mediators are currently working to bridge the gap in a proposed 60-day ceasefire deal. Hamas has accepted the proposal, which includes the release of 10 living hostages and 18 bodies held in Gaza, in exchange for the release of approximately 200 long-serving Palestinian prisoners held by israel. However, the Israeli government has yet to officially respond, reiterating it’s demand for the immediate release of all 50 remaining hostages, with officials estimating that around 20 are still alive.
Netanyahu faces internal pressure from far-right members of his coalition who advocate for rejecting a ceasefire and pursuing the annexation of the territory. Despite urging from allies to reconsider, the security cabinet approved the plan to seize Gaza City earlier this month.
A Deepening Humanitarian Crisis
The escalating conflict is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The territory’s health ministry reported on Thursday that two more people have died from starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from these causes to 271, including 112 children, since the beginning of the war. Israel disputes these figures, which are reported by the Hamas-controlled health ministry.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urgently called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, warning that a military operation against gaza City woudl inevitably lead to further death and destruction.
