Gaza faces Famine: UN Warns of “Deliberate Starvation” Amid Aid Obstruction
Updated May 31,2025
the United Nations has issued a stark warning that Gaza is the “hungriest place on Earth,” with it’s entire population at risk of famine. The UN accuses Israeli forces of deliberate starvation, obstructing aid, and displacing Palestinians.
Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stated that the aid operation in Gaza is “the most obstructed in recent history.” He noted that fewer than 600 of 900 approved aid trucks have been offloaded.
Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reported that northern Gaza has seen virtually no aid in recent days. Residents in khan Younis and Rafah also struggle to find basic necessities like flour.
Limited aid has entered Gaza following pressure from Western governments and humanitarian organizations. Though, the UN and other aid groups have refused to collaborate with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a U.S.-backed private distributor, citing concerns over neutrality and displacement risks.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric acknowledged that while any aid is beneficial, deliveries are having “very, very little impact,” and the situation remains catastrophic.
“I have no flour, no oil, no sugar, no food. I collect mouldy bread and feed it to my children. I wont to get a bag of flour for my children. I want to eat. I’m hungry,” a Palestinian told Al Jazeera.
Layla al-Masri, a displaced Palestinian, said claims of providing food are false. Abdel Qader Rabie reported his family has nothing to eat. He added that aid distribution favors the strong, leaving others empty-handed.
Eri Kaneko, another UN humanitarian affairs spokesperson, criticized restrictions on the type of aid allowed into gaza, noting that ready-to-eat meals are prohibited.
Michael Fakhri, the UN special rapporteur on the right to food, described the GHF as a tool to displace and humiliate people, violating international law.
“This is aid being used … to push people out from the north into militarised zones … and it’s about humiliating people, and it’s about controlling the population. This has nothing to do with stopping starvation,” Fakhri said.
Hind Khoudary of Al Jazeera reported that limited food is entering Gaza, and Palestinians are returning home empty-handed due to the lack of distribution points. Some parents are reportedly giving their children water to alleviate hunger.
What’s next
The international community continues to call for increased aid access and a resolution to the conflict to prevent further starvation and suffering in Gaza.Efforts to establish neutral and effective aid distribution channels are ongoing.
