Gaza Famine: US Role and the Humanitarian Crisis

August 10, 2025 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation: A Failed Experiment enabling Mass Death

The promise of a tech-driven solution to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has devolved into a system accused of exacerbating suffering, with the United States playing a key enabling role. What began as a seemingly novel idea – bypassing conventional aid organizations – is now facing intense scrutiny as conditions in Gaza deteriorate, marked by widespread famine and escalating death rates.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) originated in discussions involving Israeli officials, academics, US veterans and security contractors (including Safe Reach Solutions), and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), which has since distanced itself from the project. The core concept, appealing to some in Washington, was a complete overhaul of the aid system. However, as the scheme unfolded, it became clear that “different” did not equate to “better.”

While direct evidence of deliberate fostering by the Trump administration remains elusive, individuals pushing for the GHF found a receptive audience within the administration. The US government quickly became the GHF’s first major donor after the project’s unveiling in May. Johnnie Moore, the GHF’s executive chairman,a long-time supporter of Donald Trump, serves as a prominent spokesperson, though lacking expertise in humanitarian aid. His primary function is to present an American face for the controversial program.

Critics argue the US role isn’t simply providing aid, but actively enabling continued mass death among Palestinians, including through malnutrition and dehydration. This is compounded by a focus on public relations and “perception management,” even nearly two years into the conflict. The prevailing mindset appears to be that improving Israel’s narrative will somehow alleviate the crisis, rather than prioritizing the saving of lives.

A key component of this strategy involves restricting access for independent aid operators. UN and EU officials are facing visa denials and restrictions on visiting Gaza, while foreign journalists are denied unsupervised access. Simultaneously, the GHF touts its own deliveries – “tens of thousands of items and ingredients daily” – framing criticism as attacks on their humanitarian efforts.

However, mounting evidence paints a far more disturbing picture. The GHF vehemently denies allegations of deliberately targeting Palestinians, even in cases where hospital workers and families can identify the locations and victims of killings, which include both shootings and airstrikes.

The situation on the ground is dire. Doctors describe a horrifying reality of “auto-digestion,” where “children’s bodies are eating themselves” due to the deliberate choices surrounding aid distribution. this points to a systemic failure to address the fundamental needs of the population.

Brett McGurk, a key architect of US policy regarding the Gaza war, recently published an opinion piece outlining how Israel could improve its image as a benevolent actor. This emphasis on perception, rather than the urgent need to save lives, underscores the fundamental flaw in the current approach. The GHF, and the strategy supporting it, represents a perilous experiment with devastating consequences, prioritizing political optics over the basic human right to survival.
