Gaza City – Efforts to deliver desperately needed aid to Palestinians in Gaza are increasingly marred by violence, with recent reports detailing gunfire attacks near distribution sites resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. Concurrently, the region faces a growing crisis of malnutrition, claiming the lives of both adults and children.

Deadly Attacks Near Aid Sites

Eyewitness accounts and reports from medical facilities paint a grim picture of the dangers faced by Palestinians attempting to access aid. Hamza Matter,an aid seeker, described a recent incident: “Advancing. Thay opened fire and we fled. Some people were shot.”

Awda Hospital confirmed at least five people were killed and 27 wounded at a site operated by the Global Humanitarian Federation (GHF) near the Netzarim corridor. This incident is not isolated. Eyewitnesses report similar gunfire attacks near aid distribution points in recent days, leaving dozens of Palestinians dead.

the United Nations has documented a staggering 859 deaths near GHF sites between May 27 and July 31, with hundreds more fatalities occurring along routes used by U.N.-led food convoys.

The GHF and Concerns Over Aid Distribution

The GHF was launched in May as an alternative to the U.N.-run aid system. israel had accused the U.N. of allowing Hamas to divert supplies, alleging the militant group guarded convoys early in the war and siphoned off resources. However, Israel has not provided concrete evidence to support these claims, and the U.N. vehemently denies them. Both the GHF and Israel’s military claim thier security personnel only use pepper spray or fire warning shots to manage crowds and prevent deadly stampedes. Both entities also assert that reported death tolls have been exaggerated. neither responded to requests for comment regarding the latest reported fatalities on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

Escalating Malnutrition Crisis

Beyond the violence surrounding aid delivery, Gaza is grappling with a severe malnutrition crisis. The Gaza health ministry reported six more Palestinian adults died from malnutrition-related causes in the past 24 hours, bringing the adult death toll to 82 in the last five weeks.

The situation is particularly dire for children. As the start of the war in Gaza in 2023, 93 children have died from causes linked to malnutrition, according to the health ministry. These figures underscore the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on the civilian population and the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance.

The Broader Conflict

The current crisis stems from the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 others. Currently, 50 captives remain in Hamas’s custody, with around 20 believed to be alive.

Israel’s subsequent military offensive in Gaza has resulted in over 60,400 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. While the ministry’s figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants, the United Nations and independent experts consider them the most reliable casualty count available. Israel disputes these figures but has not released its own thorough accounting of casualties.
