Gaza aid Suspended After fatalities at Distribution Hubs

The delivery ‍of crucial food⁣ aid in Gaza faces⁣ disruption as the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has suspended operations at its distribution centers. ‍this ⁤decision follows a series of deadly incidents near ‌these sites, prompting serious questions about ensuring the safety of humanitarian assistance in the region.

The GHF,a private association supported by Israel and the U.S., ⁣announced the initial ⁣closures on social media, citing the need for updates, improved organization, and enhanced⁣ efficiency. While some centers briefly⁣ reopened, ⁢the GHF⁤ ultimately decided to close all Gaza aid hubs, urging ‌people to stay away‌ for thier own safety.

Crowds of people gather near an aid distribution site in Gaza.

The‍ closures ⁣were triggered by multiple incidents where Palestinians ‍were killed while attempting to collect aid. One incident on June 1 resulted in the deaths of 31 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry and eyewitness accounts reported by the Associated Press and Reuters. These sources indicated that Israeli soldiers opened fire near the crowds.

The Israeli defense Forces (IDF) disputed these accounts. Providing humanitarian assistance, the IDF stated on⁢ X that its forces “did not fire at civilians while they were near or within the humanitarian aid distribution ‌site⁣ and that reports to this effect ⁤are false.”

CNN reported that audio and video evidence suggested the gunfire originated from weapons used by ⁢the IDF.Weapon experts consulted by the‌ BBC noted that both the ⁣IDF and Palestinian armed⁣ groups possess weapons using similar ammunition.

Adding to the complexity, the GHF posted a‌ warning that Israeli troops were active in the area around the aid hub at the time of the June 1 shooting, and entry before 5 a.m. was prohibited.

The ⁤international Committee of the Red Cross⁣ (ICRC) reported that three more Palestinians were killed ⁢on June 2 at the same location. The IDF acknowledged awareness of casualty reports‌ and stated that the incident was under review.

According⁤ to the IDF,troops identified suspects moving toward them, deviating from ⁢designated routes, approximately half a kilometer from the aid site.Warning shots were fired, and when the suspects continued to advance, additional shots were directed near them.

On June 3,at least 27 people were killed in another⁣ deadly incident at the distribution center, according ⁣to the⁤ Red Cross. The ICRC reported that⁣ its field hospital ‌in Khan⁤ Younis received⁢ 184 patients, with 19 dead on arrival and eight more dying at the hospital. Most cases involved gunshot wounds, ‌and patients indicated they⁣ were trying to reach an aid distribution site.

“The ICRC urgently reiterates its call for the respect and ⁣protection of⁣ civilians. Civilians trying to access humanitarian assistance should not have to confront danger,” ⁣the ‌Red Cross said.

The IDF maintained that ⁢troops fired warning shots toward suspects who ⁢deviated from designated aid routes, asserting that troops are ‍not preventing civilians from reaching aid sites.⁣ The IDF stated that ‍warning shots were fired about half ‍a kilometer away from the site toward⁣ suspects advancing in a ‌threatening‍ manner.

United Nations human rights chief Volker Türk condemned the ⁤june‌ 3 incident and called for‌ prompt and impartial investigations into each attack, emphasizing that⁣ those responsible must be held accountable.

What’s⁣ next

Investigations into the incidents are ongoing, and the‌ GHF is expected to announce revised safety protocols ‍before resuming full operations. The international community ⁢continues to ‌monitor the situation, seeking ways to⁣ ensure the safe delivery⁤ of‍ humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.
