Israeli Forces Kill Hamas Military Chief in Gaza Tunnel Raid

The Israeli army announced Sunday the death of Mohammed Sinwar,a Hamas military chief,during a targeted operation last month. Sinwar’s body was recovered from an underground tunnel beneath a hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.
Brig. Gen. Effie defrin,an IDF spokesperson,said Mohammad Shabana,commander of the Rafah Brigade,was also found dead at the scene,along with other militants still being identified. The Israeli forces gave reporters a tour of the tunnel network under the European Hospital in Khan Younis, described by Defrin as a major Hamas command and control center.
According to Defrin, the Hamas command center was located directly beneath the hospital’s emergency room. During the search, Israeli forces also recovered weapon stockpiles, ammunition, cash and documents that are being reviewed for intelligence.
“We found underneath the hospital, right under the emergency room, a compound of a few rooms. In one of them we found, we killed Mohammed sinwar,” he said.
Hamas has not yet commented on the deaths of Sinwar and Shabana. Sinwar was the brother of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’s leader and a key figure in the October 2023 attack on israel.Shabana was instrumental in constructing the tunnel network under Rafah. The Israeli military operation targeted a Hamas command center and resulted in the death of a key Hamas commander, impacting Hamas tunnel infrastructure.

The IDF continues to investigate the recovered materials for further intelligence and to dismantle Hamas infrastructure in the Gaza strip. Further operations are expected to target remaining Hamas strongholds.
