Gaza Hunger Crisis: UN Warns, Israel Announces Pauses
Gaza Faces Catastrophic Malnutrition as WHO Warns of “Dangerous Trajectory”
new York, NY – The United Nations World health Association (WHO) has issued a dire warning regarding the escalating malnutrition crisis in Gaza, describing it as “spiralling out of control” with a meaningful surge in deaths, particularly in July. The agency highlighted a “dangerous trajectory” for the besieged territory, where preventable deaths are mounting due to the deliberate obstruction of aid.
Malnutrition Crisis Reaches Alarming Levels
the WHO reported that 74 malnutrition-related deaths have been recorded in Gaza this year, with a staggering 63 occurring in July alone. Among these fatalities, 24 were children under the age of five. Manny of these young lives were lost before thay could receive medical attention, their bodies exhibiting severe signs of wasting.
“This crisis is entirely preventable,” the WHO stated in a press release, directly attributing the mounting death toll to the deliberate obstruction of essential aid.Children are disproportionately affected by the crisis. In July, over 5,000 children received treatment for malnutrition, many suffering from the most life-threatening forms of the condition. However, Gaza’s four specialized treatment centers are critically overwhelmed, facing shortages of fuel and vital supplies, and are staffed by tired healthcare professionals.
“The health system is on the brink,” the WHO cautioned, as diseases spread rapidly through communities lacking access to clean water and adequate sanitation. The devastating impact of the crisis extends to pregnant and breastfeeding women, with over 40 percent now severely malnourished. The WHO also noted that it is indeed not solely hunger that is claiming lives, but also the desperate and frequently enough perilous search for food. As late May, more than 1,000 people have been killed and over 7,000 injured while attempting to access humanitarian aid.
The WHO is urgently calling for an immediate ceasefire and a sustained, ample influx of diverse, nutritious food and medical supplies. The agency emphasized the necessity for this flow to remain consistent and unhindered, while also urging robust protection for civilians, healthcare workers, and all humanitarian operations.
UN Rights Chief Demands Action on Gaza Devastation
in anticipation of the High-level Conference on Palestine, scheduled to commence at UN Headquarters in New York, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has issued a forceful appeal for immediate action to end Israel’s unlawful occupation and the ongoing devastation in Gaza.
Volker Türk warned that “Countries that fail to use their leverage may be complicit in international crimes.” He urged governments to seize the prospect presented by the conference to implement concrete measures that will pressure Israel to halt the violence and recommit to a two-state solution.
The UN rights chief characterized Gaza as a “dystopian landscape of deadly attacks and total destruction,” where children are starving and families are being killed in their desperate search for sustenance. He criticized the militarized aid distribution system, supported by the US and Israel, for its failure to meet the immense scale of need.
“We can never forget that more than 300 of our own colleagues have been killed,” Türk added, underscoring the immense human cost within the humanitarian sector itself.
Furthermore, the High Commissioner highlighted the continued violence by Israeli forces and settlers in the occupied West Bank, which includes home demolitions and the قطع of water supplies.
While reiterating condemnation of the October 7th attacks by Hamas, Mr. Türk stressed that the scale of suffering inflicted upon Palestinians since then cannot be justified. He concluded his statement with a call for an immediate, permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages and detainees, and a massive surge in humanitarian aid, stating, ”The people of the world will judge this Conference on what it delivers.”
