Ceasefire Violations and Casualties
Gaza’s Government Media Office alleges that Israeli forces have committed 393 ceasefire breaches since the truce began on October 11, 2023. These alleged violations, according to the office, have resulted in the deaths of 279 Palestinians, the majority of whom are civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, and injuries to over 652 others. The office also reports 35 detentions during Israeli raids and incursions, warning that this pattern “undermines the agreement and creates a bloody reality that threatens stability.”
The Israel defense Forces (IDF) maintain that they have killed several Palestinians who allegedly crossed the “yellow line” – a demarcation line in northern Gaza – and were identified as posing an “imminent threat” to Israeli forces. Palestinian media outlets report further casualties resulting from Israeli strikes in Gaza city’s Shuja’iyya neighborhood, alongside the movement of armored vehicles along Al-Shaaf Street in the city’s east.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, seven people were killed and 33 wounded in the past 48 hours. Since the ceasefire’s implementation, the ministry has recorded a total of 280 deaths and 672 injuries, in addition to the recovery of 571 bodies from rubble. The overall death toll in Gaza as the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023, has reached 69,513, with 170,745 wounded as reported by Reuters.
Diplomatic Tensions and Aid Delivery
Diplomatic efforts to sustain the ceasefire have encountered setbacks. Israel Hayom reported that the United States canceled a planned meeting in Istanbul between U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya. Sources cited by the paper indicate the Biden management’s displeasure with Hamas’s attempts to mobilize Arab opposition to a U.S.-drafted resolution at the United Nations Security Council.
At the United Nations, Russia has criticized the U.S.-drafted Security Council resolution on Gaza, arguing it does not adequately address the urgent need for a ceasefire. this highlights the deep divisions among international powers regarding the appropriate course of action in Gaza.
