Khan Younis, Gaza – Wednesday, February 18, 2026 – The first day of Ramadan in Gaza was marked by violence as Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man in Khan Younis, according to medical sources at Nasser Hospital. The incident occurred near the Bani Suheila roundabout east of the city, with witnesses reporting heavy gunfire from Israeli military vehicles stationed in the area since early morning.

The death casts a shadow over the start of the holy month, a period traditionally observed with fasting, family gatherings, and spiritual reflection. The fragile ceasefire, brokered with US backing, has been repeatedly violated, raising concerns about the safety of civilians and the sustainability of the agreement.

Wider Ceasefire Violations

The killing in Khan Younis is not an isolated incident. Witnesses reported further Israeli military activity across the Gaza Strip throughout the day. Near the Morag axis north of Rafah, in southern Gaza, Israeli forces reportedly opened fire. Artillery shelling also targeted eastern areas of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. In the north, Israeli vehicles fired towards eastern Beit Lahia, with artillery targeting Al-Sikka Street east of Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood. No immediate injuries were reported from these latter attacks, but the continued military presence and activity underscore the precariousness of the ceasefire.

Ceasefire Context and Rising Death Toll

The current ceasefire, which began on October 10, 2023, was intended to halt Israel’s two-year military operation in Gaza. However, despite the agreement, the situation remains volatile. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, Israeli forces have committed hundreds of violations of the ceasefire through shelling and gunfire. The ministry reports that these violations have resulted in the deaths of 603 Palestinians and injuries to 1,618 others since the ceasefire’s implementation.

The broader conflict has had a devastating impact on Gaza. As of today, the Health Ministry estimates that over 72,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 171,000 wounded since October 2023. The vast majority of casualties are reported to be women and children, highlighting the disproportionate impact of the conflict on the civilian population. The war has also caused widespread destruction of infrastructure and has displaced a majority of Gaza’s residents.

Ramadan Amidst Destruction

Despite the ongoing violence and hardship, Palestinians in Gaza are attempting to observe Ramadan traditions. Reports from the region indicate a determined effort to maintain a sense of normalcy amidst the devastation. In Khan Younis, a local artist created a sand sculpture bearing the message “Welcome, Ramadan” on the beach, a symbolic gesture of resilience. Children in the Abu Sufyan neighborhood are reportedly decorating their streets with lights and decorations, despite living amongst the rubble.

However, the economic realities of the war are making it difficult for many to fully participate in Ramadan observances. Residents of Gaza City expressed concerns about the lack of financial resources and employment opportunities. “There is no cash among the people. There is no work,” said one resident, Waleed Zaqzouq, calling on merchants to be understanding of the economic struggles faced by the population. “Before the war, people lived a dignified life. The situation has completely changed in the war, meaning people have been devastated and worn down.”

The harsh winter conditions are exacerbating the suffering. Extreme cold and torrential rains have led to the collapse of damaged buildings and flooding of displacement camps, further endangering the lives of those already displaced by the conflict. The combination of violence, economic hardship, and harsh weather conditions is creating a dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The start of Ramadan typically brings a sense of community and generosity, but this year, the focus is largely on survival. Fedaa Ayyad, a resident of Gaza City, expressed the collective grief felt by many: “There is no joy after we lost our family and loved ones. Even if we try to cope with the situation, we can’t truly feel it in our hearts… I am one of those who cannot feel the atmosphere of Ramadan.”

The continued violations of the ceasefire and the ongoing violence raise serious questions about the future of the agreement and the prospects for a lasting peace in the region. The international community continues to call for a full and sustained ceasefire, as well as increased humanitarian aid to address the urgent needs of the Palestinian population in Gaza.
