Gaza Starvation: Doctor Details Visible Ribs in Children
# Gaza‘s healthcare System Collapses Amidst Starvation and Violence
The healthcare system in Gaza is on the brink of total collapse, with doctors reporting conditions “worse than ever before” as starvation and violence grip the region. Dr. Mahmoud Yousaf, a physician currently working in Gaza, paints a harrowing picture of hospitals reduced to rubble, a desperate lack of medical supplies, and a surge in preventable deaths linked to malnutrition.
## A Humanitarian catastrophe Unfolds
The situation in Gaza has deteriorated dramatically, with a especially acute crisis unfolding around basic nutritional needs and access to medical care.Dr. Yousaf emphasizes the devastating consequences of prolonged deprivation.
“They are now dealing with the complications of medical illness they would never otherwise have to deal with outside of the reality of being deprived of nutrition and being so malnourished,” he stated. The rate of acute malnutrition, particularly among children, is alarmingly high, a direct result of restricted access to essential aid and medications.

The once-largest hospital in Gaza, Al Shifa, has been “reduced to rubble,” with the vast majority of its facilities non-functional.Medical teams are forced to “scavenge for enough supplies to do the bare minimum” for patients, operating in a constant state of crisis. This scarcity occurs against a backdrop of widespread hunger, a condition Dr. Yousaf says has been “gradually choked” over the last 22 months.
“Every healthcare worker here and patient and family tells us it’s the worst it’s ever been in finding food anywhere for anybody,” he reports. while sporadic aid deliveries have occurred in recent months, they are insufficient to address the scale of the crisis.

## the Deadly Risk of Seeking Aid
The desperation for food and supplies is driving civilians to take extreme risks. Dr. Yousaf regularly treats patients with gunshot wounds, “clearly military rounds,” often young boys and men who are attempting to retrieve aid packages.
He recounts heartbreaking stories of young people sacrificing their lives for their families. “I’ve held the hands of dying teenage boys who, when I ask why they would risk their lives, tell me they ‘don’t have a choice’,” he shared. These patients consistently identify the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) as the source of their injuries.
“All I can convey are what people tell me and what I see, and what I see are the consequences of military ballistics on human flesh and the bodies of children and young men.”
## A Descent into inhumanity
This is dr. Yousaf’s second deployment to Gaza, having previously worked there a year ago. He expresses profound dismay at the worsening conditions.
“A year ago I thought I would never see a sign of the loss of humanity as bad as I did last year and unfortunately I was proven wrong,” he said. “This year we’re seeing a level of brutality and inhumanity I didn’t think we were capable of in 2025.”
The situation demands immediate international attention and a concerted effort to alleviate the suffering of the Gazan people. The collapse of the healthcare system, coupled with widespread starvation and violence, represents a profound humanitarian crisis with potentially long-lasting consequences.
