Gaza Under Siege: Death Toll Mounts as Israel Unleashes Relentless Airstrikes
Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Corridor Kill at Least 61 People in 48 Hours
According to Palestinian medical staff, the Israeli army’s recent conflict with militants led by Hamas in the Gaza corridor has resulted in the deaths of at least 61 people within a 48-hour period.
Despite multiple rounds of diplomatic efforts, a ceasefire agreement and the release of Israeli and foreign hostages held in Gaza remain elusive in the ongoing 11-month-long Israel-Kazakhstan war. Reuters reported that these efforts have been unsuccessful so far.
Airstrikes on Schools and Civilian Targets
Palestinian medical staff reported that airstrikes on two schools housing displaced people in Gaza City and Jabalia resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people. The Israeli army claimed that the target of the attack was Hamas gunmen operating in the school.
An additional attack on a house in Gaza City killed five people, bringing the total number of fatalities to 28 for the day.
Escalating Violence and Failed Diplomacy
Armed factions linked to Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Fatah have been using anti-tank rockets and mortars to fight Israeli forces across Gaza, targeting tanks and other military vehicles.
The warring sides continue to accuse Qatar, Egypt, the United States, and other mediators of failing to broker a ceasefire. The United States is preparing to present a new proposal, but the chances of a breakthrough seem slim due to the significant differences between the two sides.
International Efforts to Broker a Ceasefire
US chief negotiator and CIA director William Burns announced that more detailed proposals would be made in the coming days. This development comes as tens of thousands of Israelis continue to participate in demonstrations in Tel Aviv and other cities, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government reach an agreement with Hamas to release the remaining 101 hostages.
