Gaza Aid Deaths Rise Amid Conflict, fueling Humanitarian Crisis
Three Palestinians, already struggling with starvation, were fatally shot by Israeli forces Monday at a US-Israeli backed relief distribution center in southern Gaza. This incident brings the total number of Palestinians killed while trying to obtain food to more than 75 in less than a week, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
The ministry reported that the shooting in Rafah, near an aid site operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), also left at least 35 people wounded. Since the GHF began operations May 27,at least 75 Palestinians have died and over 400 have been wounded while queuing for food, the ministry said.
The killings occurred hours after Israeli forces reportedly killed at least 35 Palestinians at two other US-Israeli food distribution points in Rafah and central Gaza. Eyewitnesses and local officials said Israeli troops fired directly at civilians, with many fatalities resulting from gunshot wounds to the head or chest.
Since March 2, Israel has restricted all supplies, including food, water, and medicine, from entering Gaza. This action aims to pressure Hamas into renegotiating a ceasefire deal initially agreed upon in January.
Since that ceasefire fell apart, Israeli forces have reportedly killed at least 4,000 people in attacks targeting tents, hospitals, and school-turned-shelters. Palestinian health and government officials state that at least 54,000 Palestinians have died by Israeli forces as October 2023, including more than 28,000 women and girls.
The casualties also include at least 1,400 health sector professionals, 280 UN aid workers – the highest staff death toll in UN history – and at least 180 journalists, the highest number of media workers killed in conflict since the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) began recording data in 1992.
A January report in the medical journal the Lancet suggested that the actual number of fatalities is likely underreported by 41%. The study estimated that 59.1% of those killed were women, children, and people over 65. It did not provide an estimate of Palestinian fighters among the dead. The total toll represents 2.9% of Gaza’s pre-war population, or approximately one in 35 inhabitants, the study noted.
What’s next
The rising death toll among civilians seeking aid raises serious questions about the protection of vulnerable populations and the access to humanitarian assistance in Gaza. International pressure is mounting for a renewed ceasefire and increased aid deliveries to alleviate the suffering of Gazan civilians.
