GeForce NOW Launches Native Linux App and Cloud Gaming Optimizations

According to NVIDIA, the updates are designed to expand cloud gaming compatibility across lower-powered hardware like Linux systems and Chromebooks while reducing streaming latency.

Native Linux App Graduates From Beta

The native Linux app for GeForce NOW has officially exited its beta testing phase, bringing improved stability and performance to open-source operating systems. NVIDIA stated that the release builds on months of community feedback and maintains support for Ubuntu 24.04 and later distributions. To simplify installation and future software updates, developers introduced a new Flatpack repository. Linux users can access high-performance GeForce RTX graphics rendering directly through the cloud without requiring local hardware upgrades or complex software workarounds.

Cloud Optimizations and Hardware Performance Adjustments

Alongside the Linux rollout, NVIDIA deployed server-side updates to improve streaming responsiveness. Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) Frame Generation has been optimized in the cloud to reduce input latency, targeting high-refresh-rate streaming at 60 and 120 frames per second in 1440p and 4K resolutions. Furthermore, Performance tier members receive automatic, server-side software optimizations designed to elevate frame rates in CPU-intensive games without requiring any manual installation or additional subscription costs.

Chromebook Integration and Library Additions

Students can now utilize everyday Chromebooks as high-performance PC gaming rigs by streaming titles through web browsers or applications. Eligible new Chromebook and Chromebook+ owners can access a year of the service at no cost via the Chromebook Fast Pass, providing priority server access and an ad-free experience.
