Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.,has begun an $880 million project to considerably expand and
modernize its healthcare campus. The Geisinger Danville expansion aims to enhance the patient experience through
improved accessibility, reduced wait times, and updated facilities. Construction is underway, with foundation
work slated to commence this summer.
dr. Terry Gilliland, president and CEO of Geisinger, stated that the project reinforces their commitment to
providing timely access to specialty care, both now and in the future. This major healthcare modernization
initiative addresses the growing needs of the community.
Designed by EwingCole, the centerpiece of the project is an 11-story tower featuring an expanded emergency
room, effectively doubling its current size and increasing the number of patient beds from 45 to 60. The
project will also convert all adult medical-surgical units to private rooms. the tower will also house updated
operating suites and intensive care units, with an anticipated opening in 2029. Whiting-Turner and PURE Project
Management are also part of the project team.
“Geisinger is a special place in this region as we don’t just care for patients—we also care for generations
of families,” said Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick, chief medical officer of Geisinger’s central region. “This project
will improve the hospital experience for our patients and staff, and make sure we can care for our community’s
needs, for today and future generations.”
Along with clinical enhancements, a new multi-level parking garage will be constructed to improve visitor
access.
“We’re excited for the start of this significant project, which gives our dedicated staff a modern hospital to
continue caring for our neighbors,” said Megan Brosious, executive vice president and chief operating officer of
Geisinger. “At a time when many rural communities are losing access to health care services, we’re committed to
investing in the health of our community. Our neighbors have the benefit of receiving a level of care close to
home in the kind of facility they would otherwise have to travel to cities like Philadelphia or New York to
find.”
The Danville tower project is part of a broader construction effort across the Geisinger network. The Geisinger
Healthplex State College is also undergoing expansion to improve healthcare services in Center County, Pa.,
including family practice, imaging, orthopedics, and pediatrics. Geisinger has also received funding for a solar
energy project at the site.
Furthermore, Geisinger’s Lewisburg-area campus will gain a new $32 million cancer center near Bucknell
university. Scheduled to open in 2026, the facility will offer expanded services, new providers, and enhanced
access to care, featuring 12 exam rooms, 15 infusion stations, external beam radiation, treatment planning, and
an outpatient clinic with medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, and Geisinger’s first palliative
care clinic in Union County.
What’s next
With the Geisinger Danville expansion underway, the focus remains on completing the foundation work this summer
and achieving the anticipated opening of the new tower by 2029. These improvements will significantly enhance
healthcare services for the community.
