Lenovo study Shows CIOs Must Overhaul Digital Workplace for AI Success
updated June 03, 2025
A new Lenovo study indicates that while chief information officers understand the strategic importance of generative AI, many organizations lack the digital infrastructure to fully support it. The “Work reborn” report emphasizes that incremental changes aren’t enough; a complete overhaul of digital workplace systems is needed to unlock the full value of AI.
The research found that 89% of IT leaders believe a complete overhaul is necessary to achieve meaningful results with AI. This number jumps to 93% among CIOs, IT directors, and VPs of IT. Staying ahead of competitors with generative AI requires proactive thinking and a revamp of digital systems.
according to the study, over half (51%) of IT leaders agree that better access to AI tools is crucial for innovation. Furthermore,76% believe that businesses not empowering employees with AI will fall behind within the next two years.
The study identifies barriers to realizing generative AI’s promise, including inadequate workplace personalization and poor integration of AI-driven IT support systems. While 86% of senior IT leaders agree that AI will allow employees to focus on more impactful work, the limited ability to configure devices and applications to users’ needs hinders progress.
Despite 64% reporting significant automation of IT processes with AI, confusion remains about how to effectively use generative AI. The report suggests a three-pronged approach for CIOs to reinvent the digital workplace.
What’s next
CIOs are urged to simplify and personalize the workplace experience using persona-based generative AI configurations. They should also automate IT processes to optimize support and reduce friction, and transform workflows to fully integrate generative AI across the institution. Only 39% of IT leaders report their organization has begun transforming their digital workplace, highlighting the need for immediate action.
