General Election 2024: Winners, Losers, and Political Comebacks Unveiled
The counting for the General Election is concluding, revealing initial insights about the 34th Dáil.
Winners and Losers
Wilting Greens
The Green Party is facing substantial losses. Leader Roderic O’Gorman described the results as “undoubtedly disappointing.” He is one of the few TDs expected to retain his seat, while junior ministers Joe O’Brien and Ossian Smyth appear to have lost theirs.
"Boxer is Back"
Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran announced he is "back" after losing his seat in 2020. He seems on track to regain his position in Longford-Westmeath.
Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher, a former TD first elected in 1981, is also poised for a comeback. He garnered 10,262 first preferences in Donegal and is favorable for transfers.
Former People Before Profit candidate Ruth Coppinger appears set to return in Dublin West. Fianna Fáil’s Timmy Dooley leads in Clare after a four-year hiatus.
Daly Grind
Clare Daly from Independents4Change was eliminated on the fourth count in Dublin Central. This marks her second defeat this year after losing her European Parliament seat.
Double Joy for Holly
Holly Cairns, leader of the Social Democrats, had a significant day. She gave birth on polling day and doubled her votes from 2020, receiving 9,421 first preferences in Cork South-West.
Hutch in the Hunt
Gerard Hutch, known as ‘The Monk,’ is in a strong position to win a seat in Dublin Central. He is likely to outpace Labour’s Marie Sherlock and claim the final spot.
The election results are shaping up, revealing notable comebacks and disappointing losses across parties.
