Genesis Celebrates 50th Anniversary of ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’ with Deluxe Edition Release
Genesis celebrates the 50th anniversary of their 1974 album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. They will release a Super Deluxe Edition on March 28, 2025. This edition will include a remastered double LP, a new Dolby ATMOS mix, and a complete concert from the Lamb tour. Additionally, it features three unheard demos and a 60-page coffee table book with liner notes by Alexis Petridis.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a concept album about a young Puerto Rican named Rael. The story follows his journey from New York City to a surreal world filled with mythical creatures and moral dilemmas. Peter Gabriel wrote most of the lyrics, while the band focused on the music.
Initially, critics did not praise the album. Robert Christgau described it as listenable but lacking thematic depth. However, it gained a strong following among progressive rock fans, and songs like “In The Cage” and “The Carpet Crawlers” remain key parts of Genesis’ live performances.
During the Lamb tour, Genesis played the album in its entirety at 98 shows but did not film any performances. Gabriel later expressed regret for not capturing those performances. For their 1998 box set, Genesis Archive 1967–75, Genesis included most tracks from a concert at the Shrine Auditorium but left out a few.
The new edition will include previously unreleased demos and a download card for songs such as “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” and “In The Cage.” The accompanying book will feature interviews with all five Genesis members and photos from various photographers.
Former guitarist Steve Hackett continues to honor Genesis’ music with his Genesis Revisited tours, celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Lamb. Despite interest, he hesitates to perform the entire album due to its complexity and the demand for Gabriel’s unique vision.
Gabriel has not performed with Genesis since a 1982 reunion. Phil Collins can no longer play drums due to health issues. Fans hope for a reunion tour featuring key members from the band, but Nic Collins suggests it is unlikely, citing the band’s evolution and individual pursuits.
