Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury vehicle division, is poised for a significant expansion into the European market, reversing an earlier strategy of fully electric vehicles in favor of a more diversified powertrain approach. The move comes as the brand targets a 650 percent increase in European sales over the next five years, aiming to establish itself as a serious competitor among established premium automakers.

The shift in strategy, confirmed by Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke, is a response to the challenges posed by Euro 7 emissions regulations. Originally planning a fully electric lineup by 2025, Genesis has adjusted its plans to include hybrid and range-extender electric vehicle (EREV/REEV) options. This adjustment allows the company to offer a broader portfolio of vehicles in Europe, addressing market demand and regulatory requirements.

Currently, Genesis operates in just three European markets – the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland. However, the company is now rolling out expansion “at once, instead of in separate steps,” according to sources close to the brand, with launches already underway in France, Italy, and Spain. A move into the Bulgarian market is anticipated as early as next year, potentially through Hyundai’s existing importer, “Industrial Commerce,” though the company has not yet commented on this possibility.

The European premium car segment has been experiencing robust growth, with a nearly 64 percent increase in registrations in 2025, accounting for approximately 12 percent of the total new car market in Bulgaria. This growth, up 7.4 percent from 2024 and a substantial 93 percent from 2021, presents a favorable environment for Genesis’s expansion.

Genesis sold over 221,000 vehicles globally in 2023, with 83,000 units sold in the United States. European sales reached a record 2,455 vehicles, though still modest compared to other regions. The company’s long-term strategy, consistently maintained by its parent Hyundai Motor Group, is focused on sustained growth, even in challenging markets like Germany.

Central to Genesis’s growth strategy is the “Magma” sub-brand, launched late last year as part of the brand’s 10th anniversary celebrations. Every Genesis model will eventually receive a Magma variant, designed to blend high performance with luxury. The GV60 Magma, an electric dual-motor setup delivering 650 horsepower, is leading this charge, positioned as a competitor to models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT.

The company’s future model plans also include the GV90 full-size SUV, as well as hybrid and range-extender powertrains for existing models. The GV60, a compact electric crossover debuting in 2021 and receiving a facelift in January 2025, currently accounts for 60 percent of Genesis’s European sales.

Peter Kronschnabl, Genesis’s new European Managing Director, previously held a leadership role at BMW Group, focusing on developing new markets. His appointment signals a commitment to aggressive expansion and a more proactive approach to establishing Genesis as a key player in the European premium automotive landscape.

While Genesis initially focused on East Asian and North American markets, the company is now prioritizing Europe as a critical growth region. The expansion is not merely about increasing sales volume; it’s about building brand recognition and establishing a foothold in a highly competitive market. The success of this endeavor will depend on Genesis’s ability to deliver on its promise of blending luxury and performance, and adapting to the evolving demands of European consumers and regulatory standards.

The company’s shift away from a solely electric strategy reflects a pragmatic response to market realities. While the long-term trend towards electrification remains strong, the immediate challenges posed by infrastructure limitations and regulatory hurdles necessitate a more flexible approach. By offering a range of powertrain options, Genesis aims to cater to a wider audience and accelerate its growth trajectory in Europe.
