A groundbreaking study published October 20, 2025, in PLOS Genetics has revealed a substantially higher prevalence of rare genetic diseases within the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec than previously understood. Researchers, led by Professor Simon Girard of the université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), estimate that approximately two out of every three residents carry a gene associated with a rare disease.
This discovery isn’t simply about numbers; it’s about understanding the unique genetic history of this region and improving healthcare for its residents. The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean area experienced a strong “founder effect” – a genetic bottleneck resulting from its historical settlement by a relatively small group of individuals. This means that certain genetic variations, both common and rare, are disproportionately represented in the population.
A Novel approach to Genetic Discovery
What sets this research apart is its methodology. Instead of focusing solely on individuals already diagnosed with rare diseases, Professor Girard’s team analyzed the genetic makeup of healthy individuals within the region. This proactive approach allowed them to identify and confirm the presence of several previously unknown genetic diseases circulating within the population. This is a notable shift in how genetic predispositions are identified.
“By studying the genetics of healthy people, we’re able to uncover hidden carriers of these rare disease genes,” explains Professor Girard in a recent interview. This allows us to get a much more accurate picture of the overall genetic burden in the community.
Impact on clinical Care
The findings have been met with enthusiasm from the Center intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.The CIUSSS anticipates that this new data will be instrumental in refining and accelerating clinical screening and diagnostic services for patients in the region.
Specifically, the research will inform the development of more targeted genetic testing protocols, potentially leading to earlier diagnoses and more effective treatment plans. The CIUSSS is currently working to integrate these findings into its existing healthcare infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
This study represents a crucial step forward in understanding the genetic health of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Further research is planned to investigate the specific mechanisms driving the prevalence of these rare diseases and to develop strategies for mitigating their impact on the community. The team at UQAC is also exploring the potential for similar studies in other regions with a history of founder effects.
