Researchers from The Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh studied chickens that survived a severe avian influenza outbreak in 2015. Their research uncovered specific areas in the chicken genome linked to resistance against bird flu.

The team analyzed blood samples from surviving chickens and compared their DNA to that of uninfected birds. This comparison aimed to identify genetic differences associated with survival. The outbreak had a mortality rate exceeding 99%, making this research critical.

Key Findings on Genetic Variations

The study pinpointed nine regions across the chicken genome with genetic variations that may aid in fighting bird flu. These regions were located on chromosomes 1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 11, 15, 20, and 28. While no single gene was solely responsible for survival, several genes connected to the immune system were identified.

Notably, the gene ANP 32A plays a role in how animals respond to bird flu. Its presence supports the relevance of other newly identified genes in defending against the virus.
