Vaudois Lawmakers Vote to reconsider Vehicle Tax increase
Right-leaning members of the Vaud cantonal parliament narrowly approved a motion Thursday demanding a rollback of recently increased annual vehicle taxes and penalties for polluting vehicles. The motion passed by a vote of 72 to 70,sending it directly to the Council of State for review.
the motion, led by Deputy Yann Glayre and supported by 18 members of his party and 11 PLR (Liberal Radical Party) lawmakers, seeks to cap tax increases based on CO2 emissions at 25% instead of the currently approved 50%. It also calls for a delay in the implementation of the new tax brackets, which were scheduled to take effect January 1, 2026.
The Council of State announced Monday it had adapted the regulations implementing the law on vehicle and boat taxes (LTVB). This decision followed an amendment proposed by Deputy David Raedler and adopted during the budgetary debate, which is expected to increase tax revenue by 10 million francs.
Environmental Amendment drives Tax Hike
The tax increase will affect more than one-third of light vehicles (39%). Initially, on November 19, 2025, the Council of State decided to raise the tax surcharge for the most polluting vehicles from 25% to 40%.
the debate highlights ongoing tensions between environmental goals and economic concerns within the Vaud parliament. Supporters of the tax increase argue itS a necessary step to encourage the adoption of cleaner vehicles and reduce carbon emissions. Opponents contend the higher taxes disproportionately impact lower-income residents and could hinder economic activity.
Further developments are expected as the Council of State considers the motion. The outcome will likely shape the future of vehicle taxation and environmental policy in the canton of Vaud.
